When we seek a counselor, we always ask, why did you get into this career?  We want to know what drives the person we are trusting our mental health to. So, what’s my why?

Well, once upon a time, I was a middle school girl going through an unexpected move, a brutal custody battle, and more friend drama than I could cope with. I desperately wanted someone to talk to. I wanted someone who made me feel heard because they wanted to hear me not because my parents paid them. I wanted someone to see beneath my words to the troubles underneath. I wanted what most kids want: to be seen and heard.

Eventually, I realized that I might not have had that myself, but I could be that for other kids. I also experienced love and help from adults that shaped who I am, and I wanted to give back. So, I decided to become a counselor. By the 8th grade, I knew without a doubt that’s what I wanted to do.

As the years went on and it was time for college, my dreams stayed the same. Now I had a second reason for wanting to be a counselor. I was beginning to see how hard being an adult is more importantly, how vital having a loving family can be. I realized I wanted to help heal families too.

It took me a few years to get into private practice, but I’m here now and ready to help families and children feel seen and heard.
