The art of making friends

A friendship begins with hello… sometimes a very awkward hello. The first moments of a new beginning can feel awkward and a little odd for people of all ages—yes, even for the outgoing person who seems to make friends so easily. So, how do you get past the slow beginning?

Good banter goes a long way.

Lighthearted teasing and playful “roasting” can be signs of growing trust, showing that both people feel secure enough to let their guard down. Inside jokes develop when we share experiences. Sometimes you can share a funny moment with the last person you would ever expect, and before you know it, you’re sharing secrets.

When in doubt, ask a question!

People love to talk about the things that interest them! So, ask questions. Maybe you notice their backpack has a Harry Potter pin on it, so you ask about their favorite book. Or maybe you ask for help with an assignment. Once the momentum gets going, conversation tends to follow. Questions can be the bridge between the awkward hello and the forever friendship you’re looking for.

The Golden Rule

Treat others the way you want to be treated. We’ve all heard it. But have you heard, “Be the friend you want to have”?

If you want a friend who is kind and listens, then be a listener. If you want a friend who is a gossip and mean, then partake in gossip. My point is, you attract the vibes you send out.

Make a list, say a prayer, or make a vision board about the kind of friendships you want. Then, become that kind of friend.
